Dilihat dari luar, desain kamera EOS 4000D sangat mirip dengan EOS 1300D. EOS 4000D memiliki kontrol dan penempatan tombol yang teratur (seperti EOS 2000D, sehingga ketiga kamera ini memiliki kemiripan yang signifikan: EOS 2000D,4000D dan 1300D), ukurannya pun sama persis. Untuk lebar yaitu 129mm, tinggi 101,6mm dan kedalaman 77,1mm, dimensinya pun serupa namun EOS 4000D lebih ringan 39g dibandingkan EOS 1300D dan 2000D.
Pada bagian belakang kamera EOS 4000D, terdapat tombol untuk pengaturan ISO dan white balance serta ada juga tombol untuk mode Drive yang memudahkan anda dalam memilih antara single shot, kontinu, self-timer dengan penundaan 10 detik atau 2 detik dan fungsi dari self-timer kontinu yang membantu kamera dalam pemotretan burst setelah penundaan beberapa detik yang serupa dari self-timer. Kecepatan standar dari pemotretan kontinu yaitu masih sama dengan kamera EOS 1300D (3fps), di karenakan kedua kamera ini mengusung mesin prosessor gambar yang sama yaitu DIGIC 4+.
Kamera EOS 4000D mampu merekam video full HD resolusi 1920×1080 piksel pada 30fps. Anda dapat memutar mode dial kedalam posisi video pada kamera untuk memulai rekaman video, lalu anda bisa menekan tombol Live-View yang terletak disebelah viewfinder untuk memulai dan menghentikan rekaman. EOS 4000D juga dilengkapi dengan sebuah fitur Video Snapshot yang memungkinkan kamera untuk merekam klip video mulai 2-8 detik dan menyusunnya kedalam sebuah Video Snapshot Album (secara berurutan) dengan background musik yang dapat anda pilih sendiri.

Kamera DSLR entry-level mungkin tidak akan begitu terkenal dengan kemampuan kecepatan burst shooting yang dimiliki, sama halnya dengan kamera EOS 4000D yang hanya memiliki kecepatan burst pada 3fps, mirip dengan EOS 2000D. kamera ini juga memiliki daya tahan batre yang ampuh, mampu memotret hingga 500x shots. Mungkin kemampuan ini tidak terlalu luar biasa, namun bisa dapat disandingkan kemampuannya dengan kamera mirrorless (entry-level) saingan lainnya.

Kamera EOS 4000D dari Canon mengusung sebuah sistem AF yang terhitung sudah lama (belum diperbarui). Cakupan AF ini juga sangat terbatas hanya dibagian tengah frame saja, jadi anda harus siap untuk mengatur ulang subjek anda jika mereka tidak berada di pusat tampilan. Performa yang dimiliki masih dapat diandalkan dengan sebuah sensor cross-type yang sensitif dibagian tengah susunan sistem, yang mampu menawarkan hasil terbaik saat pemotretan dengan kondisi cahaya yang bersahabat, namun kualitasnya akan menurun saat pencahayaan juga minim. Teknologi Dual-Pixel CMOS AF dari Canon yang ada pada kamera DSLR saingan lainnya selalu menawarkan kinerja terbaik, sayangnya teknologi ini tidak terdapat pada EOS 4000D, sebagai ganti anda dapat mengandalkan kecepatan AF yang dibawah rata2 dan saat menggunakan mode Live-View, tampilan yang disuguhkan cenderung tidak jernih dalam layar.
Kamera Canon EOS 4000D mampu menghasilkan gambar dengan kualitas noise-free pada ISO 100 hingga diatas ISO 800, anda dapat menggunakan pengaturan ISO tercepat yaitu 3200, namun sebaiknya menjauhi ISO 6400, 1600 dan khususnya ISO 12,800 karena resiko noise akan semakin nampak. Built-in pop up flash pada kamera ini sangat membantu saat anda menggunakannya di dalam ruangan, tidak ada tampilan red-eye dalam gambar, serta keseluruhan pencahayaan juga lebih baik. Untuk memotret malam hari, anda dapat menggunakan kecepatan minimum shutter speed 30 detik dan Mode Bulb untuk mendapatkan hasil terbaik dan memudahkan anda dalam merekam cahaya yang cukup dalam banyak kesempatan.
